CHAN 2018 fallout: Rwanda's coach opts out after first-round exit

FERWAFA, the Rwandan Football federation, are set to part ways with coach Antoine Hey after a first-round exit at the Championship of African Nations (CHAN) tournament in Morocco.

The federation in a Twitter statement said the contract termination was upon the request of the German trainer. FERWAFA said it was going to meet with the sports ministry to review the coach’s request.

“Official: FERWAFA has received a proposal from coach Antoine Hey seeking to terminate his contract. FERWAFA & MINISPOC will meet in the upcoming days to review his request. However, Coach Antoine Hey is duly urged to respect contract termination clauses binding both parties,” the tweet read.

The Rwandan team, the Amavubis were pooled in Group C of the tournament along with Nigeria, Libya and Equatorial Guinea. They managed one goalless draw against Nigeria, a one-nil win against Equatorial Guniea and a late loss in their final game against Libya.

Of the eight teams to have crashed out at the group stage, Hey is the second coaching casualty. Guinea fired their coach, Kanfory Bangoura over poor outing at the tournament.

Bangoura who is also known as Lappe had been coach of Guinea’s senior team as well as the CHAN squad of locally-based players since July 2016.

The CHAN enters the knockout rounds this weekend. Two games will be played on Saturday January 27, 2018 when hosts Morocco take on Namibia and Sudan face Zambia. In the other round of games on Sunday, Nigeria play Angola whiles the Congo Libya match completes the fixtures.
